White Turtlehead

Chelone glabra

Plantaginaceae (Plantain family)

Hooded white blooms for wet shade — and the host plant of the Baltimore checkerspot.

White turtlehead earns its name from snug, two-lipped white flowers — sometimes blushed with pink — that really do resemble a turtle’s head. Blooming from late summer into fall on upright leafy stems, it brings cool, clean color to damp, partly shaded corners.

Where it grows in North Carolina

Native to wet ground statewide — seeps, stream banks, wet meadows, and the margins of swamps and floodplain woods. It favors consistently moist, rich soil and tolerates more sun where its feet stay wet.

Wildlife value

It is the principal larval host for the Baltimore checkerspot butterfly, and the fall flowers are worked hard by bumblebees, which are strong enough to push inside the closed blooms for nectar.

In the garden

Ideal for rain gardens, pond edges, and shaded low spots that stay damp. Keep the soil moist and never let it bake dry; pinch stems in early summer for a bushier, more floriferous plant.
