Spring Into the Field: Wildflower Walks Across North Carolina
There is no better way to learn native plants than in the field, alongside neighbors who love them. This spring, every one of our chapters is hosting free, family-friendly wildflower walks — and you are invited.
What to expect
Walks are led by volunteer naturalists who know their local flora intimately. Expect an easy pace, plenty of stops, and answers to every “what’s that?” you can think of. Most outings run two to three hours and cover gentle terrain.
In the mountains, look for trout lily, trillium, and the season’s first flame azalea. In the Piedmont, our walks trace creek bottoms thick with spring ephemerals. Down in the Sandhills and Coastal Plain, longleaf savannas are waking up with wild lupine, pitcherplants, and the first orchids of the year.
How to join
Walks are free and open to the public, though some sites limit group size. Check the Events page for dates near you and register early — popular outings fill quickly.
Bring: sturdy shoes, water, a hand lens if you have one, and curiosity. Leave the trowels at home — we look, we photograph, we never dig.
